A lot of the times Christians will find themselves making the same mistakes over and over again. This happens especially when there are bad habits that need to be overcome. So, if you’re one of those finding yourself committing the same sin repeatedly, rest assured, you are not the only one.
Romans 7:23
But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.
In this verse, the apostle Paul writes about the struggle between a mind that wants to serve God always and a sinful nature of always sinning. In the next few verses, he writes about how Jesus frees him of his sinful nature and redeems him.
Romans 7:24-25
Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?
Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind, I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.
Jesus’ blood has the power to wash away all of your sins, even those sins which are committed repeatedly. You are never too far from His reach and never far from forgiveness.
But this doesn’t mean we can go sinning left and right on purpose because at the end of the day He has the power to forgive us. We should have respect enough to resist the temptations of sin and stand firm in our faith.
I am also not saying that if you make a mistake you are a bad person, you just have to repent sincerely.
Galatians 6:7
Don’t be misled–you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.
This verse says that God cannot be mocked. What that means is God can see right through someone who has not repented sincerely. Sometimes a repeated sin shows that the person has not repented sincerely in his or her heart, but has only said that they repent. God is not fooled by those who aren’t sorry and those who don’t really care.
Repeated sin shows that you have a particular weakness to that temptation – which we all have in varying degrees. Continually sinning should be an indication that there is an area of your life where you will have to work extra hard not to sin.
If you really want to repent sincerely, here are a few steps that will put you on the right path.
- Pray that God will help you overcome your sin. Ask Him to fill you with His spirit.
- Try to figure out what is causing you to be in that particular situation and take purposeful steps to avoid them.
- Tell a trusted Christian friend so they can pray with you and hold you accountable.
- If you happen to fall back into sin turn right back to God. Keep trying! Know that a day will come when sin will no longer be a problem.
God is always ready to forgive, but we should not become content in our sin and think that it doesn’t matter. Instead, we should avoid and resist the temptations of sin.
