tith·ing

ˈtīT͟HiNG/
noun
1. the practice of taking or paying a tithe.

When the topic of money comes up in church it always seems to get awkward for everyone. We all expect the rent to get paid, for there to be craft supplies for children’s ministry, and for there to be coffee served every Sunday morning, but we often times don’t think about how all of things are paid for.

I know a lot of us have our own budgets to worry about, but giving to God can be such a blessing when done with the right attitude.

2 Corinthians 9:7

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

We should exhibit the same excitement when we give to God that we display when we find the perfect gift for someone and we can’t wait to give it to that person because we know it will make them happy!

Giving shows that we are making a commitment to the church which is the hands and feet of Christ. Missionaries, Pastors, and other Christian workers are showing there commitment by going where Christ has called them and trusting in Him to provide for their well-being. At the same time the Holy Spirit is moving in the hearts of believers to give generously to support the work that God is doing, while also learning how to trust in Him with their own finances.

Now, we shouldn’t be giving because we feel like we are expected to or because we want something in return. Where is the joy in doing something that attitude? Heartless gifts mean nothing. When giving to God you should do it because you feel it is what’s right in your heart. It’s exciting to know that when you are giving your finances, time, skills, etc. that they could be used for something huge in the Kingdom of God!

Acts 20:35

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

Jesus said it is better to give than to receive and it’s true when you believe in what you are giving. Giving is an act of worship and service that brings glory to God’s name.

I challenge you this week to give cheerfully knowing that your generosity is used to bless others who are in need! Also ask God to open your eyes to opportunities to give!
