When you think of a penny what’s the first thing that comes to mind?
For most of us we think of its value. A penny doesn’t really mean much to people. That’s why you can find them on almost every street, side walk, and parking lot in America. Nobody ever worries if they drop a couple pennies here and there. We don’t frantically scavenge through the parking garage or department store if we drop a penny, now do we? Most of us just shrug it off because after all, it’s just a penny. Its value is low and you’re not going to break the bank if you decide to just leave it wherever it may have fallen. We don’t esteem the penny for its almighty worth to society, and to be completely honest , we probably never will.
Now, I’m not writing this to tell you we should start recognizing the penny for its substantial mark it leaves on humanity. I’m writing this with a full heart to tell you this is often how our society views girls.
As Joel from For King and Country has said, “You ladies are told to talk like a penny, and walk like a penny, and dress like a penny, and then so often we’re stuck wondering why girls are treated so cheap and ultimately like a penny.”
We are regarded as though we’re just another lowly valued penny on a street corner, trampled on, dehumanized, and over looked with no consideration for who we are as individuals and/or who we are in Jesus.
We are so much more than just a penny.
We are prized far more than a lowly valued, forgettable, unappreciated object. Why? Because we were bought with a price from the Creator of all things.
We deserve so much more than to be treated as if we are just another penny on the parking garage floor that gets walked on and devalued everyday. Why? Because the God who miraculously strung the stars in the sky is the same God who knows every hair on your head.
We are worth far “more than rubies,” the Bible tells us in Proverbs 3:15. We have been etched in the palm of God’s hand. Shaped and molded into who we are meant to be. Given talents and abilities; each different, but nevertheless, more valuable than any treasure here in the universe.
Every girl needs to hear how much they are cherished. We are so often told by the media how we are never quite skinny, curvy, pretty, or fashionable enough that we lose sight of how precious we really are. We are more priceless than all the things this world has to offer. We have been given this life with the knowledge of what Jesus did at Calvary 2000+ years ago. How freeing is it to know for certain that our value doesn’t lie the surface deep, impractical, unrealistic, devaluing categories society has placed before us. Instead, our value lies in the redeeming, nail-scarred hands of our all powerful and grace inhabiting Abba Father.
