What makes a father a father? Honesty, integrity, courage, strength, gentleness, a warm embrace, a hand to wipe away tears, comfort beyond measure, guidance, and a whole lot of love.
Some of you might be saying “yes that’s exactly my dad!” and others saying “I’m certain that’s not my father.” Whichever category you fall under, let’s get one thing straight; you have an awesome Father.
How do I know that? Because I have the same one. Maybe you just haven’t met Him yet. He’s really cool though I promise. I’m not talking about your earthly dad; I’m talking about your Heavenly Father.
1 John 3:1
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
When we think of what a father should be we think of honesty, integrity, courage, and all those things I listed earlier, even if we have a father that may not be doing all of those things. To be real with you, not even a great father can be all those things all the time, because they are human. Humans fail, and make mistakes and hurt each other. When we put our trust in other humans they almost always fail us, but when we put our trust in God, He never fails us.
“My trust in God flows out of the experience of his loving me, day in and day out, whether the day is stormy or fair, whether I’m sick or in good health, whether I’m in a state of grace or disgrace. He comes to me where I live and loves me as I am.” – Brennan Manning
The Love of the Father is unconditional, unwavering, and perfect. He reaches for you even when you pull away. He sees the child in you and still calls out to you and says “Beloved, you are my masterpiece.” He loves you when you feel broken and when you think you have it all together; at every moment. The real question is will you believe it? My hope and prayer is that we all will. We need to believe that even when we mess up, God still cares for us and wants to comfort us. Just know that there is someone who wants to rejoice with you and weep with you. Most of all we are all LOVED by a Good, Good Father.
Romans 8:37-39
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
