A letter to my mom on Mother’s Day,
My Sweet Mama,
How do I thank a woman who has sacrificed so much for her children? Who is selfless, loving, patient, kind, smart and giving? The older I get, I see how wise you are and how priceless you are. As I have two kids of my own now (and know the ups and downs of motherhood), I wonder “How in the world did Mama not lose it with me and Buddy?” I’m laughing as I write this because I can see you just shaking your head. But really…how did you stay so patient and calm all the time? I can only pray that I am at least half the mom you were to me and Buddy. As I look back on my childhood, I never heard you complain, even though I know for sure most days you were exhausted. I have never heard you say anything mean about anyone else. You know what you believe in and firmly stand for what is right without having to shout or point fingers.
Most of these attributes and gifts are from seeking the Lord and praying for your family. But most of all, your heart is rooted in thankfulness and gratitude. I just read the other day that the DNA of joy is thankfulness. Remember the verse you would make Buddy and I sing every morning on our way to the bus stop? “In everything give thanks for this is the will of God, in everything give thanks for this is the will of God, in everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” I Thessalonians 5:18. You did just that…gave thanks in every situation.
Thank you so much for being a mother and grandmother who continues to sacrifice her own needs so her children and grandchildren can have better. You teach me not only by your words but mostly by your actions that family is priceless and to cherish your loved ones with a passion. You show me how to submit, love, care and pray for my husband. I love when I can visit Daddy’s Sunday school class that he has been teaching for so many years. While he is teaching, you don’t say a word, but silently sit by him and support him.
Many people will use Proverbs 31 this Mother’s Day to honor their mothers, but this truly comes from the bottom of my heart. “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.” Proverbs 31: 28-30
I don’t tell you enough how much I love you and how thankful I am for you. Happy Mother’s Day, Mama. God bless you always.
To my precious daughter on Mother’s Day…
Dear Reagan,
My sweet little girl…just last night you read the Bible for family worship. I sat there looking and listening as you read so well from God’s Word. My prayer for you in that moment was that you would read and speak the Truth always, that you would have a hunger and thirst for God’s Word and seek Him. As I was asked to write you a letter this Mother’s Day about motherhood, just one simple thought kept coming to my mind…Seek Him. In this letter, I will not give you five things every mother should know, do or be…only Seek Him. Even your verse for school this week is Isaiah 55:6a “Seek ye the Lord while He may be found.” I’ve enjoyed discussing with you ways in which we can seek the Lord.
Every day I think to myself, “Be the mom I would want Reagan to be one day when she grows up.” Oh how I try and oh how I fail. There are good days and there are bad days. Little girlie, I hope I am a role model and example to you, but I will fail you. Thank the Lord for his abundant grace and His mercies are new every morning! Marriage and motherhood can be overwhelmingly difficult and hard, but overwhelmingly the biggest blessings you will ever experience! Seek the Lord every day…be intentional and pray and fight for your marriage and for your children. When you seek Him, you will know how to be the best mother. So let’s keep the main thing the main thing – Seek Him, my precious daughter, in every area of your life. Seek Him; He will never fail you!
Little girlie, God has blessed me to be the mommy of the most amazing girl I have ever met. You are sweet, dramatic, smart, full of life and overflowing with giggles! I love spending every day with you…and, Reagan,…I love you.
